What is BODMAS?

BODMAS is a set of rules that determines the correct order of operations in a mathematical expression. Each letter in BODMAS stands for a specific operation:

  • B: Brackets (solve expressions within brackets first)
  • O: Order (calculate powers, roots, or exponents next)
  • D: Division
  • M: Multiplication
  • A: Addition
  • S: Subtraction
Following the BODMAS order ensures that everyone gets the same answer when solving the same problem.

Why is BODMAS Important?

In mathematics, the order in which you perform operations can completely change the result.
For example: Expression: 10 + 2 × 3

  • Without BODMAS: Solve left-to-right: (10 + 2 = 12, then 12 × 3 = 36)
  • With BODMAS: Solve multiplication first: (2 × 3 = 6, then 10 + 6 = 16)
Clearly, following BODMAS gives the correct answer: 16

How to Apply BODMAS? A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Solve Brackets
Focus on expressions inside (), {}, or [] first. Work from the innermost bracket outward.

Step 2: Simplify Orders
Handle powers (), roots (√4), or exponents (10⁴).

Step 3: Perform Division and Multiplication
Go left to right, solving any ÷ or ×.

Step 4: Finish with Addition and Subtraction
Again, go left to right, solving + or -.

Examples to Understand Better

Simple Example: Expression: 8 + (2 × 5)

  1. Solve Brackets: (2 × 5 = 10)
  2. Add: 8 + 10 = 18
Intermediate Example: Expression: (12 ÷ 4) + 5 × 3
  1. Solve Brackets: (12 ÷ 4 = 3)
  2. Multiply: 5 × 3 = 15
  3. Add: 3 + 15 = 18
Advanced Example: Expression: 3 + 6 × (5 + 4) ÷ 3
  1. Solve Brackets: (5 + 4 = 9)
  2. Multiply: 6 × 9 = 54
  3. Divide: 54 ÷ 3 = 18
  4. Add: 3 + 18 = 21
Tough Example: Expression: (20 - 5) ÷ (3 + 2) × 4²
  1. Solve Brackets: (20 - 5 = 15) and (3 + 2 = 5)
  2. Simplify Order: 4² = 16
  3. Divide: 15 ÷ 5 = 3
  4. Multiply: 3 × 16 = 48

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Skipping brackets and solving left-to-right without prioritizing operations.
  2. Forgetting to handle powers or roots before multiplication and division.
  3. Confusing addition/subtraction with multiplication/division priorities.

Practice Makes Perfect!

Here are a few problems to try on your own:

  1. 7 + 3 × 2
  2. (6 + 4) × 5 - 3
  3. 12 ÷ (2 + 4) + 8 × 2
  4. (18 - 6) ÷ 3 + 2³
  5. 50 ÷ (2 + 3) × (4 + 1)
